Hello, reader! With the permission of Mikhail Cheremkin, the author of these simultaneously beautiful and scary photos, I am writing a post about one of the least known death camps of the GULAG system.
In the late 30s – early 40s, by the order of the leadership of the NKVD of the USSR, the Indigirsky educational camp (Inlag) was created in the upper reaches of the Moma and Kolyma rivers, in which so-called “enemies of the people” mined unknown ore. Perhaps uranium, although it is not excluded that mined gold and tungsten.
“As a child,” recalls Mikhail, “I heard adults talking many times about the fact that death camps were located on the territory of our district. And when the opportunity came, I managed to organize a photo expedition to these natural-beautiful, but eerie, in their content , places. ”
On the way there are many mountain rivers and lakes.
Lake Kuolum at night …
… and in the afternoon
Short rest. The most reliable SUV in Yakutia is the Yakut horse.
On the way, Michael and his companions stumbled upon the wreckage of an American A-20 bomber, which crashed in 1943 during the Alaska-Siberia ferry. 70 years have passed, and the American star is clearly visible.
Mikhail considered the plane, and they were considered a bearded owl.
Landscapes of the Momsky Ulus of Yakutia are indescribably beautiful.
In the forest, Michael stumbled on the rail.
Borullool camp. Buildings, except for CAT, not preserved.
In Soviet times, herders were taken apart for kindling.
The machine-gun tower was heated by stoves, which were made of semi-barrels.
This tower ruined time.
And the fence will still stand …
Only mountains can be better than mountains.
Damn beautiful!
The weather turned bad and Michael and his comrades asked to take shelter to the local reindeer herders.
A life.
Deer in bad weather, too, rest.
Well, the weather settles down.
It’s time to go.
Chersky Ridge.
The length of the mountain system is more than 1500 km., And the highest point is Mount Pobeda (3003 meters).
This is certainly not Shalbuzdag, which I had to climb, but also high!
Riding here in any way, the horse must be helped.
Here in this valley is another camp – Sugun.
Here, as in a mountain village, everything is made of stone — garages, workshops, a punishment cell …
Michael on the background of one of the camp buildings.
The room of security guards is built of wood. Even the bed of one of them has survived.
Punishment cell. The floors and ceilings are concrete, and the walls are made of stones. In the punishment cell there are 5 cells in which heating was not provided even in winter. Imagine in the winter at -50 Celsius … hungry, sick people died like flies. The stove was in the corridor where the guards were.
“The terrible place … we came at night and when I took pictures of the cameras, it was scary and scary … I thought I heard the moans and cries of prisoners,” writes Mikhail in his travel notes.
The only window is in the corridor.
All roads in here were built by prisoners. Such roads are called “Road of bones” (Road of bones).
“I can’t even believe that in such a place, the regime created such horrors,” Mikhail said.
Silent Witnesses …
Time is like water …
There is another camp ahead of which women were held.
About then still fresh wooden doors the nails bent.
Again conflicting feelings.
An old brick stove in one of the barracks collapsed.
And this building is not completed. The story is now silent for some reason – either the camp was closed, or not enough builders survived.
“All the mines are blown up from the inside,” says Mikhail.
And the radioactive background is normal.
The punishment cell in the women’s camp was also not heated.
Lamp post?
One of the PPC.
In the barracks lived for 16 people.
Women do … hygiene first.
Yakutia was called a prison without bars, sending revolutionaries here. Later, in Stalin’s time, the grids did appear.
Everything. It is time to go back through the Great Moma frost (Ulakhan Taryn).
Ice lies all year round.
Thaws, of course, slowly …
… but too big to melt completely.
So lies the whole summer under the sun.
Here and catch a cold near.
It is better to go ravine – there is no wind.
And again a little rest.
Admire the views.
Far gone.
Scales …
Well that’s all!
