Yakutians have already started to leave for the collection of a tasty and useful wild-growing green onion. The director of the Yakutsk Botanical Garden Sargilan Borisov told about where and when it is best to collect, what species are growing in the republic.
On the territory of Yakutia there are nine species of wild onions. Such species as onion straight and short, grow in all regions of the republic, and the onion is shiny and branchy – only in the central and south-western.
“Now to collect green onions – it’s about time. When the flower arrow leaves, the plant becomes stiff, fibrous and tasteless. So harvest wild onions better before flowering, “- says the director of the botanical garden Sargylan Borisov.
Green onions are the leader in their family in terms of the amount of vitamins A, C and B. It also supplies the essential amino acids (lysine, methionine, tryptophan) in our body and contains many phytoncides that fight infectious diseases.
Near Yakutsk, a fragrant onion can be collected in the vicinity of Tulagino, on the Green Meadow, in Khatassah, but it is best, of course, to go to the islands, where for a couple of hours you can collect supplies for the whole winter. Here the onion grows fast, creeping, branched, straight and shiny.
Very rare in the south of Yakutia is Maximovich’s bow, this species is listed in the Red Book of Yakutia. Also protected are the onion creeping and the onion branchy, growing in dry meadows and steppes. The collection of these species in nature is prohibited.
